Castroneves wins at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va., June 25 (UPI) -- Helio Castroneves won the SunTrust Indy Challenge Saturday night at Richmond, Va.

It was the first victory of the year for the former Indy 500 winner and seventh of his IndyCar career. He beat runner-up Dario Franchitti by crossing the finish line 0.5588 seconds ahead of him.

Pole winner Sam Hornish Jr., who won the race in 2002, led the first 42 laps. Ryan Briscoe crashed while in third place on lap 89 and defending series champion Tony Kanaan did not finish the race.

It was the first time that had happened since Nazareth in 2003.

Patrick Carpentier, Tomas Scheckter and current points leader Dan Wheldon completed the top-five.
