ANAHEIM, Calif., May 31 (UPI) -- Right-hander Jered Weaver, the top draft pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2004, has reached contract terms with the team.
Details of the deal, reached just before a signing deadline late Monday, were not disclosed.
"It has taken a while, but finally, at the deadline, we got a deal done with Jered Weaver," said General Manager Bill Stoneman on the team's Web site. "A lot of last-minute discussions made the deal possible. It was really only (Monday) that this was really going to come together. We're not sure what kind of shape he is in (but) we don't want to rush things. We don't know what stage he is in as far as conditioning."
The 6-7 right-hander was 37-9 with a 2.43 ERA and 431 strikeouts in three seasons at Long Beach State University.
He gives the Angels a strong nucleus of young arms, including Ervin Santana, Steven Shell, Chris Bootcheck and Dustin Moseley and Joe Saunders.
