Roddick withdraws in Miami

MIAMI, March 25 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick withdrew during his first match at the NASDAQ-100 Friday, giving Fernando Verdasco a spot in the next round.

Roddick lost a first-set tiebreak and trailed in the second set, 4-3, when he retired with an injured right wrist.

Roddick won this event last year.

Carlos Moya, meanwhile, survived three match points to defeat James Blake, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tommy Robredo, Ivan Ljubicic and Gael Monfils all advanced to the third round.

In the women's bracket, both Venus and Serena Williams advanced along with Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Serena Williams is the three-time defending champion and easily defeated Vera Douchevina, 6-3, 6-0.

Sharapova bounced back from a poor outing last week at the Pacific Life Open to overwhelm Eleni Daniilidou, 6-0, 6-4.

Henin-Hardenne played her first match of 2005 and defeated Abigail Spears, 6-4, 6-3. Henin-Hardenne has been out with a knee injury.
