INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- Defending champion Roger Federer defeated Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-3 Sunday to reach the third rund of the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, Calif.
Other men's winners included Marat Safin, champion of the 2005 Australian Open.

On the women's side, Evgenia Linetskaya of Russia upset second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo.
Others advancing included Svetlana Kuznetsova and Eleva Dementieva.
