NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Left-hander Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins won the American League Cy Young Award Thursday.

The honor goes to the league's top pitcher. Roger Clemens of the Houston Astros won the National League award earlier this week.

The 25-year-old Santana is the first Twin to win the award since Frank Viola in 1988.

Santana had a 20-6 record and an earned run average of 2.61, best in the league, while helping the Twins win their third straight division title.

He struck out at least 10 batters in 12 games. In one late-inning stretch, he did not allow a run in 33 innings. He was 13-0 after the all-star break.

The Most Valuable Player awards in the two leagues will be presented next week.
