Bonds, Suzuki honored by fellow players

NEW YORK, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- San Francisco's Barry Bonds has been named the best player in baseball in a vote by other major leaguers.

The 40-year-old slugger won the 2004 Players Choice Player of the Year award Thursday.

Bonds also was named top National League player. Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was the AL winner.

The Players Choice winners are chosen in a secret ballot among major league players.

Bonds led the NL with a .362 batting average. Suzuki set a major league record with 262 hits.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Jim Thome was named the Marvin Miller Man of the Year for his play as well as contributions to the community including his work with prostate cancer and cerebral palsy foundations.

Minnesota's Johan Santana and San Francisco's Jason Schmidt were chosen as top pitchers.

Other winners included Pittsburgh's Jason Bay and Oakland's Bobby Crosby as best rookies and the New York Yankees' Orlando Hernandez and St. Louis Cardinals Chris Carpenter as comeback players of the year.
