ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Graeme McDowell shot a 10-under-par 62 for a three-shot lead Thursday after one round of the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
McDowell's round tied the course record at the St. Andrews Old Course.
Four golfers shared second place in the European Tour event at 65: Retief Goosen, Peter Lonard, James Kingston and David Howell.
Vijay Singh and Ernie Els, ranked 1-2 in the world, were in a group at 4-under 68.
McDowell, who won the Italian Open this year, missed a birdie put on the final hole that would have given him a record-breaking 61.
"I was walking up to the green with my caddie, and I said to him, 'I saw this putt a million times on television and I know exactly where it's going,'" McDowell said. "But it turned more than I expected."
