BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Former champion David Ferrer was among Tuesday's first-round winners at the Romanian Open Tuesday but top-seeded Fernando Verdasco was upset.
Romanian Victor Hanescu humbled the Spanish Verdasco 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3). Sixth-seeded Ferrer avoided an upset by beating Swiss qualifier Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Two other seeds advanced on Day 2. No. 2 German Florian Mayer beat Dutchman Dennis van Scheppingen 6-1, 6-1 and No. 7 Italian Filippo Volandri defeated Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-1.
Other opening-round winners were Argentine Jose Acasuso, Serbian qualifier Novak Djokovic, French qualifier Richard Gasquet, German Philipp Kohlschreiber, Austrian Stefan Koubek and Spaniard Alex Calatrava.
Acasuso eliminated fellow Argentine Franco Squillari 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, while the 17-year-old Djokovic beat Frenchman Arnaud Clement 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
