Serena reaches third round

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Two-time champion Serena Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Jennifer Capriati all reached the third round of the U.S. Open Wednesday.

Williams needed 59 minutes to turn in a 6-4, 6-3 victory over fellow-American Lindsay Lee-Waters, the only mother in the draw. Williams had eight aces in the match.

She will next play Tatiana Golovin of France, a 16-year-old who defeated Japanese Akiko Morigami, 6-4, 6-4.

Mauresmo, the second seed, had a workout in eliminating Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Vakulenko requested medical attention to address an apparent foot injury while trailing 1-4 in the final set.

Capriati easily disposed of Spaniard Magui Serna, 6-0, 6-2.

Seeded Russians Elena Dementieva and Vera Zvonareva also reached the third round as Dementieva defeated France's Severine Beltrame, 6-3, 6-2, and Zvonareva won over Els Callens of Belgium, 6-3, 6-3.

Other winners in the women's draw included Ai Sugiyama of Japan, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
