Thursday's Olympic Highlights

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Thursday's highlights at the Olympics:

-- Olympic fever swept Athens and Greece on the eve of one of the special moments in sports, the opening ceremony and the lighting of the flame.

"It will delight and captivate a global audience," said Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, president of the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee.

-- In the opening round of the soccer tournament, Iraq recorded a shocking 4-2 win over Portugal. It was the first Olympic appearance by athletes from Iraq in 16 years.

-- The United States Olympic Committee announced Dawn Staley would carry the American flag during the opening ceremony. This is the third Olympics for the U.S. basketball star.

-- Archers from South Korea set three world records in the qualifying round. Sung Hyun Park scored 682 points in the women's event, three more than the previous world mark. Dong Hyun Im had 687. The South Korean women's team also set a world record with 2,030.

-- The tennis draw was announced with No. 1 seed Roger Federer scheduled to meet Nikolay Davydenko in the first round on Sunday.
