Ferrero has bad back at Toronto Masters

TORONTO, July 26 (UPI) -- Juan Carlos Ferrero lost to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro on Monday when he was forced to retire with a back injury at the Tennis Masters Canada.

Santoro was leading 3-2 in the first set when Ferrero, former world No. 1, deded he was unable to continue.

Ferrero, last year's French Open champion and U.S. Open runner-up, has been plagued by injuries this season. He's winless since the second round at Wimbledon.

Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela avoided an upset by beating Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Other winners were Spaniard David Ferrer, Russian Igor Andreev, Swedes Joachim Johansson and Robin Soderling, Belarusian Max Mirnyi, Frenchman Cyril Saulnier, Czech Jan Hernych and American Alex Bogomolov Jr. who beat Croat Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
