Federer, Serena win third-round matches

LONDON, June 27 (UPI) -- Defending champions Roger Federer of Switzerland and American Serena Williams won in straight sets Sunday and advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Federer defeated Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Williams, who has won the women's title the past two years, topped Maqui Serna of Spain 6-4, 6-0.

Andy Roddick of the United States eliminated countryman Taylor Dent 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-1) in a battle of big servers. Roddick hit 16 aces to six for his opponent.

Other men's winners included Britain's Tim Henman, Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, Mark Philippoussis of Australia, Sweden's Joachim Johansson, Germans Florian Mayer and Alexander Popp, Xavier Malisse of Belgium, American Vincent Spadea and Croatians Mario Ancic and Ivo Karlovic.

Croatia's Karolina Sprem, who earlier eliminated Venus Williams, beat another American, Meghann Shaughnessy.

Other women advancing included Amelie Mauresmo of France, American Jennifer Capriati, Paola Suarez of Argentina, Nadia Petrova of Russia, Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Rita Grande of Italy.
