Kuerten, Nalbandian, Hewitt, Gaudio win

PARIS, May 31 (UPI) -- Three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten, David Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt and Gaston Gaudio advanced Monday to the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Kuerten, seeded 28th, defeated No. 23 Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. The Brazilian, winner of the open in 1997, 2000 and 2001, will next play the eighth-seeded Nalbandian of Argentina, who scored a 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win over No. 20 Marat Safin of Russia.

Hewitt, of Australia, the No. 12 seed, defeated Xavier Malisse of Belgium 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) and will meet Argentina's Gaudio, a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 victor over Russian Igor Andreev.

The other men's quarterfinal matchups feature No. 3 Guillermo Coria of Argentina against No. 5 Carlos Moya of Spain and England's Tim Henman, the ninth seed, playing Juan Ignacio Chela, No. 22, of Argentina.

In the women's quarterfinals Tuesday, No. 2 Serena Williams of the United States meets countrywoman Jennifer Capriati, seeded seventh. Third-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France plays No. 9 Elena Dementieva of Russia, No. 4 Venus Williams takes on No. 6 Anastasia Myskina of Russia, and 14th-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina battles 17-year-old Russian Maria Sharapova, the 18th seed.
