The only other seeded player scheduled to compete on Wednesday was No. 6 David Sanchez of Spain, who won his contest when Stefan Koubek of Austria withdrew with a fever.

Jurgen Melzer of Austria moved into his second straight quarterfinal with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Russian Igor Andreev. Melzer ousted top seed Marat Safin of Russia last week in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters Series at Hamburg.
