Florida Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester put the Canadians in front just 20 seconds into the third and Matt Cooke of the Vancouver Canucks added some breathing room 10 minutes later.

Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers had the other goal and Vezina Trophy finalist Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers made 28 saves for Canada, which defeated Sweden in overtime in last year's gold medal game.

Earlier, the United States ended an eight-year medal drought by taking the bronze with a 1-0 shootout victory over Slovakia.
