Federer advances, Roddick ousted in Rome

ROME, May 4 (UPI) -- Top seed Roger Federer won but No. 2 Andy Roddick of the United States was eliminated Tuesday in the first round of the Italian Open.

Federer, of Switzerland, defeated Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Argentina's Guillermo Canas scored a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 win over Roddick, who committed 35 unforced errors.

Roddick joined No. 3 seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany on the sidelines. Schuettler lost his first-round match Monday.

The defending champion, Felix Mantilla of Spain, saved four match points to defeat American Robby Ginepri

5-7, 7-5, 6-0.

Seventh-seeded Sebastien Grosjean of France advanced with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The No. 8 seed, Nicolas Massu of Chile also moved on with a 6-7 (9-11), 7-5, 6-3 victory over Massimo Dell'Acqua, an Italian qualifier.

Other first-round winners included 12th-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic, who beat American James Blake 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 14 Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands, a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victor over Todd Martin of the United States.
