Roddick falls in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Swede Jonas Bjorkman surprised top-seeded Andy Roddick Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the second round of the Qatar Open.

Roddick, the reigning U.S. Open champion who won the 2003 ATP Tour Champions Race, had posted a straight-sets win over Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

Roddick won 72 matches last season, six less than Switzerland's Roger Federer.

"Everybody is going to have off days, it's going to happen," he said.

In this event for the fifth time, Bjorkman had never made it past the second round.

Defending champion Stefan Koubek of Austria joined Roddick on the sidelines after losing to Korean Hyung-Taik Lee, 6-4, 6-4. Koubek, who turned 26 last week, won his third career title here last year.
