Goosen leads Chrysler Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Retief Goosen fired a 5-under 66 Friday -- the best round of the day -- to take a one-shot lead midway through the Chrysler Championship.

Jose Coceres and J.J. Henry were tied for second while Chad Campbell, Jerry Kelly and Charles Howell III were two shots off the lead.

The 2001 U.S. Open champion, Goosen was at 7-under 135 after two trips over the Copperhead Course at the Westin Innisbrook.

Goosen has won in Europe this year and has seven top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. But he has not won on American soil, despite standing 26th on the money list with $1.88 million in 17 events.

The season-high cut of 3-over 145 was not high enough for PGA champion Shaun Micheel, British Open champ Ben Curtis and Phil Mickelson.

None of those three will take part in the season-ending Tour Championship.
