Hantuchova, Farina Elia advance

LEIPZIG, Germany, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova on Monday reached the second round of the Sparkassen Cup International indoor tennis tournament.

Hantuchova defeated 18-year-old Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-5, 6-2, for only her second win over a player ranked inside the world's top 30 in her last 12 tournaments. She has not advanced to the quarterfinals of an event since the German Open in May.

Eighth seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 victory over Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.

Switzerland's Patty Schnyder rallied past 2000 finalist Elena Likhovtseva of Russia, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-3.

Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic beat Magui Serna of Spain, 6-1, 7-5, to advance to a second-round meeting with French and U.S. Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne of France, the second seed.
