Hornish Jr. wins closest 1-2-3 finish

JOLIET, Ill., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Sam Hornish Jr., two-time defending IRL champion, won the closest 1-2-3 finish in IndyCar history Sunday.

Hornish defeated Scott Dixon by just 0.0099 seconds and third-place finisher Bryan Herta by .0100 in a three-abreast finish to win the Delphi Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

It was the third-closest finish between first and second in IRL history. Hornish defeated Al Unser Jr. here last year by .0024 secdonds in the closest finish in IRL history. Hornish also won the second-closest finish in IRL history when he defeated Helio Castroneves by .0096 seconds at Texas Motor Speedway last September.

Hornish drove to victory in a Dallara/Chevrolet while Dixon was in a G Force/Toyota. Herta's third-place car was a Dallara/Honda.
