Clijsters wins as world No. 1

TORONTO, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters trounced Francesca Schiavone, 6-1, 6-2, and all nine seeds won their second-round matches Wednesday at the Rogers AT&T Cup.

Clijsters moved past the injured Serena Williams and took over the top spot in women's tennis with last week's title at the JP Morgan Chase Open. This was her first match since, having received a first-round bye.

Clijsters beat Schiavone for the second time in three matches. She beat her, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinals of last week's event before defeating American Lindsay Davenport in three sets in the final.

Since losing to Venus Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals, Clijsters has lost just one match, falling to compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final of the Acura Classic two weeks ago.
