Baltimore 5, N.Y. Yankees 3

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Sidney Ponson tied the American League lead for wins Thursday afternoon as Baltimore eased past the New York Yankees, 5-3.

Ponson gave up three runs and six hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. He threw 121 pitches before running out of gas in the ninth.

Jorge Julio recorded a one-pitch save, helping Ponson (14-5) match Toronto's Roy Halladay and Russ Ortiz of Atlanta for the major league lead in victories.

Ponson earned his first win against the Yankees since Sept. 19, 1998, the day Cal Ripken Jr.'s streak of consecutive games played ended. It was the longest skid by an active pitcher against any one team.

Brian Roberts collected a career-high four hits and a pair of RBI, and Jeff Conine and B.J. Surhoff homered for the Orioles, who have won seven of their last eight.

Loser Roger Clemens (9-7) allowed five runs and nine hits in just four innings as the Yankees lost for just the 10th time in 36 games.
