Moya advances in Croatia

UMAG, Croatia, July 22 (UPI) -- Defending champion and top-seeded Carlos Moya and No. 2 Fernando Gonzalez advanced to the second round Tuesday at the Croatia Open.

One day after No. 4 Olivier Rochus and No. 5 Fernando Vicente were eliminated and third seed Felix Mantilla pulled out, the remaining seeds all won.

A native of Spain, Moya avoided the upset bug with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory Czech Jiri Vanek for his 40th victory of the year.

Gonzalez was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Croatian qualifier Lovro Zovko. The Chilean was a semifinalist last week at Stuttgart before forced to drop out of his match with Tommy Robredo midway through the second set with a stomach virus.

No. 6 Rafael Nadal of Spain was up 6-3, 1-0, when Romanian Adrian Voinea called it quits with a right pectoral injury.
