Inkster defends Women's Open title

NORTH PLAINS, Ore., July 2 (UPI) -- Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Juli Inkster and Se Ri Pak will be at the top of the favorite's list Thursday at the start of the U.S. Women's Open.

Between them, those four stars have won 15 of the past 17 women's majors and 17 of the last past 21.

One of them could well add to that record as the most significant tournament in women's golf begins at Pumpkin Ridge's Witch Hollow course. The par-71 layout, which can be stretched to 6,550 yards, is likely too demanding to produce a fluke winner.

"It is tough," defending champion Inkster said of the course. "You don't hit a lot of drivers. The main thing is to get the ball in the fairway. The greens are hard and undulating and if you miss them it can be extremely tough."
