Seattle 6, Detroit 0

SEATTLE, April 26 (UPI) -- Joel Pineiro overcame wildness and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter Friday night and Bret Boone hit a three-run double to help chase Mike Maroth after two innings as the Seattle Mariners breezed to a 6-0 blanking of the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers, who managed three hits in Thursday's 2-0 loss to Mark Mulder and the Oakland Athletics, were shut out for the sixth time this season.

Maroth (0-6) became just the second pitcher in major league history to lose six games in April. Dave Stewart also suffered six April defeats with the Texas Rangers in 1984.

Detroit, which fell to 2-19, looked as if it might end its offensive futility in the first inning, when Pineiro (2-1) walked the bases loaded with one out. But he got Dean Palmer to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Mariners promptly staked him to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame on consecutive RBI singles by John Olerud and Carlos Guillen.

In a play symbolic of the Tigers' ineptitude, Dmitri Young sat under Olerud's fly ball to left field, but the ball dropped 10 feet in front of him, allowing Randy Winn -- who hit a leadoff triple -- to score the only run Pineiro needed.

Detroit again loaded this bases in the second inning on two walks by Pineiro and a single by Omar Infante, but Gene Kingsale grounded out to end the threat.

The Mariners rocked Maroth in the bottom of the inning. Willie Bloomquist led off with a double and Dan Wilson singled before Ichiro Suzuki made it 3-0 with a single to right field. After Winn singled to load the bases, Boone cleared them with a double into the left field corner.

Detroit loaded the bases again with one out in the sixth. But Ramon Santiago fouled out against Julio Mateo, who struck out Bobby Higginson.
