UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Alexei Yashin scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on two others Thursday night and the New York Islanders ended their power-play drought with a 5-3 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Shortly after the Islanders relinquished a two-goal lead, Yashin beat former Islanders goaltender Roberto Luongo on a wraparound, making it 4-3 with 44 seconds left in the second period.

The Islanders built a 3-1 lead on the strength of two power-play goals. Defenseman Kenny Jonsson's goal with 5:35 remaining in the first period tied it at 1-1 and snapped New York's none-for-21 drought with the man advantage.

Defenseman Adrian Aucoin also scored on the power play for the Islanders, who are 3-1-1 after opening the season with consecutive losses.

Chris Osgood made only 18 saves but got a glove on Dmitry Yushkevich's hard shot from the high slot, preserving a 4-3 lead with four minutes left.

Stephane Matteau and defensemen Lance Ward and Brad Ference scored for Florida, which played for the second time in as many nights, having opened a four-game road trip Wednesday with a 4-1 win in Toronto.
