Tampa Bay 5, Baltimore 4

BALTIMORE, May 18 (UPI) -- Greg Vaughn, who had not hit a home run since last Aug. 5, connected twice Saturday night, including a tiebreaking two-run shot in the top of the ninth, as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays rallied to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, 5-4.

With the game tied, 3-3, entering the ninth, Randy Winn drew a leadoff walk from Rick Bauer (1-2). Buddy Groom replaced Bauer and struck out Steve Cox and Ben Grieve.

Tampa Bay reliever Esteban Yan surrendered a home run to Gary Matthews Jr. -- his first as an Oriole -- and a single to Geronimo Gil before retiring the next two batters for his seventh save of the campaign.

Doug Creek (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the victory.

Baltimore scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Jeff Conine had a sacrifice fly in the first, Jerry Hairston an RBI single in the second and Jay Gibbons a sacrifice fly in the third.
