McGinley, Lawrie share Dunhill lead

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Paul Lawrie and Paul McGinley shared the lead Saturday when the third round of the Dunhill Links Championship was halted by darkness.

Rain, mist and poor visibility disrupted play to such an extent that none of the 156 professionals on any of the three courses being used for the tournament were able to complete 18 holes.

Lawrie was the more disappointed of the leading duo to have to stop since he had played the first 12 holes on the Old Course in 8-under.

McGinley's progress at Carnoustie was more sedate, but still outstanding due to the severe conditions. He made 11 straight pars to remain at 13-under for the tournament when play was suspended.

When the dismal conditions eventually brought play at all three venues to a halt, the co-leaders were three shots in front of four players. Brian Davis, David Howell and Peter O'Malley were at 10-under as they played early on the back nine at Carnoustie while Ernie Els was also at that figure through eight holes at St Andrews.

The weather produced a contingency headache for tournament officials, who finally decided the event would be played over a full 72 holes and be extended into Monday.
