Pittsburgh 10, New York Mets 1

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The New York Mets had their playoff hopes ended Tuesday night when Bronson Arroyo pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game and Craig Wilson continued his torrid hitting with three hits and four RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates posted a 10-1 triumph.

New York's fourth loss in five games and Philadelphia's win in Atlanta eliminated the defending National League champions from postseason contention.

New York made an improbable charge, winning 25 of 30 games before dropping two of three games in Atlanta over the weekend. With their playoff chances slim at best, the Mets dropped the series opener Monday before being routed Tuesday.

Pittsburgh's second straight win improved its overall record to 60-98. The Pirates need to win three of their final four games to avoid losing 100 contests for the first time since 1986.

Arroyo (5-7) surrendered 10 runs in a start against the Mets last season but was dominant in this one. He took a shutout into the ninth, walked just three and struck out three. He had never gone more than seven innings in any of his 25 previous starts.

The Pirates jumped on Mets starter Bruce Chen (7-7) after two were out in the opening inning. Brian Giles walked and Aramis Ramirez ripped an RBI double. Wilson followed with his 13th homer, a two-run shot to left.

Pittsburgh tacked on two runs in the fifth. Jason Kendall led off with a single and Jack Wilson reached on an error by catcher Mike Piazza. Giles flied out but Ramirez singled up the middle for a 4-0 lead.

Grant Roberts relieved Chen and surrendered a run-scoring single to Craig Wilson.

Mark Corey took over for the Mets to start the sixth and allowed singles to Mendy Lopez and Kendall around a strikeout of Arroyo. Jack Wilson made it 6-0 with a base hit into left-center field and Kendall came around to score when center fielder Jay Payton booted the ball.

Giles was walked intentionally and one out later, Craig Wilson singled up the middle to score Jack Wilson.
