Boeing contributes to A-10 life cycle

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force awarded two contracts to Boeing Co. to move forward with its support of the modernization of the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft fleet.

The contracts center on the updating and aligning of structural analysis tools and data technology for the A-10 fleet of the U.S. Air Force.

Both contracts support a $1.6 billion effort to improve the life cycle and sustainment of the A-10 for integration into current and future military requirements.

Boeing holds several contracts for the A-10, including one that focused on developing 3-D models that resolved wing-crack issues that grounded the fleet last year for a brief time.

"We are honored to continue supporting the Air Force and the A-10 fleet," said Bill Moorefield, A-10 program manager for Boeing.

The A-10 "Warthog" was introduced to the U.S. Air Force fleet in 1976 and remains engaged in current support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
