TEWKSBURY, Mass., March 27 (UPI) -- U.S. company Raytheon Co. has been awarded a Phase III contract to continue work on a radiation detection technology.
The contract was awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Under the eight-month $2.3 million contract, Raytheon will continue development of its Stand-Off Radiation Detection System.
The Phase III deal is managed by the Homeland Security Department's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office and, if successful, has a potential for a fourth phase.
"The purpose of SORDS is to develop an advanced nuclear sensor that can determine the type and location of radiation sources at much greater distances than current systems," Michael Del Checcolo, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems vice president of engineering, said in a statement.
"We are excited about helping DNDO accomplish its mission to protect the homeland."
