SGI contracted for computing upgrades

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Silicon Graphics Inc. has been contracted by the U.S. Defense Department to support a computing modernization program.

U.S. company SGI says its Silicon Graphics Federal Inc. subsidiary was awarded six contracts to support the Technology Insertion 2009 High Performance Computing Modernization Program.

Under the $40 million contract, SGI will install next-generation computer technologies at the Defense Department's research and development installations, including the Army Engineer Research and Development Center and the Air Force Research Laboratory, among others.

"SGI is honored to provide these premier Defense Department facilities with the high-performance compute, storage and service solutions needed to handle some of the most advanced computing challenges in the world," Robert Ewald, SGI chief executive officer, said in a statement.
