STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has awarded a contract to L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. to continue biometric support services.

Connecticut-based L-1 was awarded the follow-on contract from the TSA to continue support of the Hazardous Materials Endorsement enrollment program. Under the $80 million contract, L-1 will perform biometric background checks on commercial drivers requiring an HME endorsement.

The TSA requires the HME endorsement for all commercial drivers transporting hazardous materials in the United States as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism initiative.

"After four years of working in close partnership, we are proud the TSA selected us to continue this service," Robert LaPenta, L-1 chairman, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"This award recognizes all the hard work we do for the TSA and their stakeholders on this important program, including the state licensing bureaus and, of course, the nation's commercial truckers."
