Towhawk UAS tests successfully

COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. companies Irvine Sensors Corp. and Applied Research Associates say their joint aerial sensor project has successfully completed recent live-fire testing.

Irvine Sensors and ARA partnered on a project to develop the Towhawk, an unattended aerial sensor technology designed for integration with ground combat vehicles. Officials say Irvine Sensors and ARA successfully demonstrated the Towhawk during live-fire exercises in Kentucky and Georgia.

The Towhawk UAS System is designed to provide situational awareness to ground combat vehicles and target threats engaged by the vehicle's BAE Systems-made combat weapon system.

"It was a pleasure to witness these highly successful demonstrations of this powerful capability," John Carson, Irvine Sensors chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"The ready now configuration of this system leads me to believe that we could retrofit fielded armor vehicles with this superb capability without much effort. We intend to continue to work with the Army user community to develop Towhawk into a program of record."
