Military robots to change warfare

DUBLIN, Ireland, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Next-generation robots will change the way militaries fight wars, according to a report released by Ireland-based market analysis firm Research and Markets.

The report, which analyzes the market for robots designed for military and emergency response applications, suggests that use of the next-generation robotic technologies will provide an advantage over enemies in combat zones.

Officials say the biggest advantage of robots is the potential to reduce the number of fatalities caused by improvised explosive devices because of the safe distance the technologies enable.

The report says the more robots are used by the military and first responders, the greater strategic advantage defense officials will be able to leverage over terrorist and other threats.

"This is a phenomenon that will have a major impact on the way we run the military and police societies," the release said.

The Research and Markets report also says the emergence of a military robot market presents many opportunities. Officials estimate the military and emergency response robot market will likely increase in contracts from "$441 million in 2007 to reach $43.7 billion by 2014," according to the report.
