WASHINGTON, March 23 (UPI) -- FBI Director Robert Mueller has tapped a former aide to Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno as counselor and deputy chief of staff.
Lisa Monaco was named Wednesday in statement from the bureau. She has been serving as special counselor to the director since January 2006. Prior to that she was she was an assistant U.S. attorney for Washington, DC for five years, including a stint on the Enron task force, during which she was co-lead trial counsel in the prosecution of five former executives of Enron Broadband Services.
Prior to joining the U.S. attorney's office, Monaco was counsel to the attorney general from September 1998 to January 2001. In that position she provided advice and guidance to then-Attorney General Janet Reno on national security, criminal enforcement, budget and Congressional oversight matters.
As Special Counsel, Monaco "advised Mueller on a wide range of legal and policy matters in the national security and criminal arenas," the statement said.
"Lisa's record of achievement as both a criminal prosecutor and a legal and policy advisor in criminal and national security matters make her exceptionally well-suited for this position," said Mueller.
As deputy chief of staff, Monaco "will continue to spearhead priority projects, provide advice and counsel to the director, and work closely with the chief of staff to manage the day-to-day operations of the director's office."
From 1997 to 1998, Monaco was law clerk to the Judge Jane Roth, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990 from Harvard University and her Juris Doctor degree in 1997 from the University of Chicago Law School.
