Report: Gulf targeted for al-Qaida attacks

KUWAIT CITY, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Kuwaiti news reports say al-Qaida is preparing to carry out its threat to launch attacks against the country and other Gulf states.

The Arab Times said Monday high-level security sources at the Ministry of Interior had confirmed two al-Qaida leaders had met in Iraq recently with agents from an unidentified Arab country to discuss attack plans.

Attacks on Kuwait would be in retaliation for Kuwait's "foreign policy decisions," sources said.

Kuwait is a key regional ally of the United States. It is a staging area for U.S. troops deployed in neighboring Iraq.

No additional details were given, but Interior Ministry sources were quoted by the newspaper as saying precautionary measures had been put in place, and Kuwait was coordinating measures with allied countries.
