WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Relatives of Sept. 11 terror attack victims want the U.S. Senate to pass a stand-alone security reform bill and not get sidetracked by Iraq.
In an open letter to senators, Voices of Sept. 11, a group representing relatives of those killed in the attacks, urged "a clean bill, limited to implementing the remaining Sept. 11 Commission recommendations."
The Senate Tuesday will begin debating a series of security bills, including one authored by Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., that Democrats and former commission members say implements the remaining recommendations of the Sept. 11 Commission.
But some have suggested the bill might also serve as a vehicle for efforts to limit President Bush's panned troop surge in Iraq.
"This legislation is far too important to be politicized by the introduction of non-germane, controversial amendments and debate, particularly those relating to Iraq," the families wrote.
