DHS launches traveler redress program

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The Department of Homeland Security announced a program to allow travelers to address concerns that arise when entering the United States.

The DHS Travelers Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) will allow travelers to seek redress and resolve problems related to possible misidentification by a security watchlist maintained by agencies of the DHS, a press release from the DHS announced on Wednesday.

"We're making travel more efficient and secure by offering a convenient redress process," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. "This is a win-win program. Eliminating false-positives makes the travel experience more pleasant for legitimate visitors, and it frees up our frontline personnel to apply even greater scrutiny of those individuals who truly present safety and security risks."

Travelers can now file a complaint at the DHS TRIP Web site regarding situations where a traveler believes he or she was inappropriately delayed, denied boarding, identified for additional screening, or had difficulty gaining entrance to the United States. The information received through the Web site will be distributed to agencies of the DHS and shared with the Department of State and airport and airline operators when appropriate.

The DHS said that TRIP is one of many steps taken to improve the traveler screening process by making it more efficient and secure, and to facilitate information sharing among agencies tasked with national security.

The department also recently completed a complete review of the U.S. No-Fly list to ensure that it only includes individuals who currently pose a threat to United States.
