WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- President Bush has picked a U.S., Army general to be the State Department's counter-terror chief.

Lt. Gen. Dell Dailey, of South Dakota, a career Army general with special operations experience, was nominated Monday to the Senate-confirmable post of the State Department coordinator for counter-terrorism, the White House said in a statement.

Dailey is currently director of the Center for Special Operations at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. Prior to that, he served as deputy commander of the 18th Airborne Corps of the U.S. Army. Dailey has also served as an infantryman, Army aviator and cavalry troop commander, the statement said.

If confirmed, he will replace Henry Crumpton, a CIA veteran who led the agency's efforts in Afghanistan after Sept. 11, 2001. Crumpton stepped down Feb. 1, having held the post since July 2005, according to the State Department Web site.

Dailey received his bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and his master's degree from Shippensburg University.
