Saudis study intel proposal

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia is mulling a NATO proposal it join four other Gulf states in a security and intelligence partnership with the international alliance.

Arab News reported Monday the Saudi commitment to look at the possibility was voiced Sunday by Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal at the opening of a symposium in Riyadh of NATO and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The cooperative agreement proposal was made in the so-called Istanbul Summit Communique of 2004. Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain have already signed on to the plan that provides for the exchange of information and experience to combat terror.

Arab News said that in announcing Saudi Arabia's decision to study the proposal Prince Saud noted that King Abdullah had already called for an international conference under the auspices of the United Nations to help combat terrorism

Attending the meeting in Riyadh were NATO's deputy secretary-general, Alessandro Minuto Rizo, GCC Secretary-General Abdul Rahman Al-Attiyah and various European ambassadors to Saudi Arabia.
