Bangkok plans surveillance camera network

BANGKOK, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Thai capital of Bangkok are working on plans to install surveillance cameras around the city.

The Bangkok Post reported Friday city officials are considering placing closed circuit television cameras at 1,628 locations as a security measure following last New Year's Eve bombings that killed three people.

The bombings were blamed on supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled in a military coup in September.

Deputy Bangkok Gov. Panich Vikitsreth said the first phase of installation would cover 504 locations within the next four to six months. Priority sites would include pedestrian bridges and areas around the capital's bus and train stations.

Authorities have called upon CCTV manufacturers to give the government details of their equipment in advance of bidding on the project.

Sources said the city was primarily looking at systems that could later be linked to other CCTV networks.
