Kenya setting up new border posts

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Kenya is building new police posts along border areas with Somalia to prevent weapons and terrorists from entering the country.

The Daily Nation said Thursday three new facilities were being set up in coastal areas near Somalia. Others have already been established along the land border and were functioning.

"The entire border is under surveillance and sealed off," an unidentified senior police officer was quoted as saying. "After the refugees realized they could not penetrate through land, they turned to the Indian Ocean where they tried to sneak into Kenya using boats.

"Marine police are patrolling the ocean and that is how most of the Somalis in police cells were arrested in Coast Province."

Kenya earlier this week disclosed that more than 50 people had been detained trying to enter Kenya from Somalia this month, and some were believed to have ties to Somalia's Islamic Courts Union, an Islamist militia on the run from Ethiopian troops backing the country's Transitional Government.

Among ICU members are a number of persons believed part of al-Qaida and to have been involved in terrorist attacks in Kenya.

Additional details on the border posts were not immediately available, b ut a source said all border posts would remain functioning even after the situation in Somalia permitted a drawdown of Kenyan army and other law enforcement personnel from the frontier.
