Kenyans hold suspected terror suspects

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Kenya authorities have detained 10 people believed to have vital information on a number of terrorism suspects wanted by the United States.

Two of those detained are suspected of involvement in the 2002 bombing of the Paradise Hotel in Kenya.

According to Kenyan news reports, the detainees were part of a group that entered Kenya from Somalia through the Indian Ocean port of Lamu between Jan.7 and Jan. 8.

Among the suspects detained were four women believe to be relatives of fugitives Fazul Abdullah and Swaleh Ali Nabban, also wanted in connection with the hotel attack.

The suspects were being held in an undisclosed location, the report said. Additional details were not immediately available, the Sunday Nation reported.

Kenya has stepped up surveillance of its border with Somalia in the wake of the rout of Islamist militia - including suspected al-Qaida members - by Ethiopian troops backing Somalia's Transitional Government.

U.S. and other forces also have naval forces off the Somali coast to prevent terrorists from escaping the country.
