Japan, U.S. upgrading contingency plans

TOKYO, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Japan and the United States are upgrading military contingency plans in case of war on the Korean peninsula or an attack on Japan, a report in Japan said.

The Asahi Shimbun on Friday said the updating of the 2002 plan called "5055" would include more detailed operational information, such as use of specific ports and hospitals for logistical support in case of military emergency.

The report said the contingency planning, being discussed by the U.S.-Japan Bilateral Planning Committee, would cover areas such as operational mission, supply and command and control.

The plan would "specify measures for a direct military attack against Japan and a contingency outside the country that would not develop into a direct attack against Japan," the Asahi Shimbun said.

Plans for a direct attack on Japan would focus on North Korean missile strikes, the report said, quoting unidentified sources.

In a related development, a report from the South Korean capital of Seoul said Seoul and Washington were said to also be planning to upgrade contingency measures but the Korean Defense Ministry had refused to confirm it.
