TAIPEI, Taiwan, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Taiwan's legislature is slated Friday to consider in a plenary session a much-delayed budget plan for a $192 million arms buy from the United States.
The proposed buy would include diesel-powered submarines, anti-submarine aircraft and Patriot anti-missile batteries.
The China Post on Thursday said the scheduled consideration, would could result in the proposal being forwarded for a committee-level review, came after the opposition-dominated legislative rules panel agreed to place a related budget proposal on the plenary session docket.
The proposed spending for the arms had been shelved by the opposition for months.
President Chen Shui-bian had criticized the opposition for stalling the plan, saying the delay endangered national security.
According to the report, the United States has been pressuring Taiwan to end the delay.
