Air Force launches GPS satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- thhe U.S. Air Force has launched a Delta II booster from Cape Canaveral, Fla. carrying a NAVSTAR Global Positioning System satellite.

The Air Force's 45th Space Wing oversaw the Nov. 17 launch, a joint government and business effort.

Air Force Print News reported that the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System satellite is the third in a series of modernized GPS satellites that incorporate improvements that provide greater accuracy, increased resistance to interference and enhanced performance.

The 45th Space Wing commander, Brig. Gen. Susan Helms, said, "This success is another example of how the 45th Space Wing is at the leading edge of providing combat effects to our warfighters."

The launch mission was commanded by 1st Space Launch Squadron Capt. Greg Vice, who said, "Our launch team is tremendous. This was our third Delta II launch within seven weeks. Launching systems such as GPS is one of the many ways space operators contribute to the Global War on Terror."
