Aussies nab teacher on terror charges

BRISBANE, Australia, May 11 (UPI) -- A high school teacher has been arrested in Brisbane for allegedly planning terrorist attacks.

Police said more than 100 pounds of explosives were seized when 40-year-old John Howard Amundsen was taken into custody at home earlier in the week.

Among the explosives was one device that included nails and razor blades.

Police also seized books about al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and Nazis.

The Australian said Amundsen, charged under new national security laws, is also charged with having used the Internet to make threats against the police. The threats were apparently made after police began investigating him for fraudulently obtaining the explosives.

Police evacuated about 30 homes near Amundsen's at the time of the raid and residents were not allowed to return for nearly 24-hours while police continued to search the home for more explosives.

No details were available on whether authorities believe the woodwork and metalwork instructor has any connection to terrorist organizations.
