Aussies may sell uranium to India

CANBERRA, Australia, May 11 (UPI) -- Australia is considering selling India uranium even if New Delhi continues to refuse to sign the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Australian, quoting unidentified government sources in Canberra, said any deal, however, would require India to submit to inspections by the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency.

The possibility of a deal was discussed last week in India in a meeting between an Australian delegation that included Australia's deputy director of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office.

India repeated its policy of not signing the NPT, but discussed the possibility of other regulatory safeguards, the newspaper said.

A spokesman for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has declined to provide details of the talks.

Australia has the world's largest uranium deposits and exports more than 11,000 tons of uranium oxide annually.

India is a nuclear power, but has refused to sign the NPT because only the five original signatories were allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
