Australia beefing up cargo security

CANBERRA, Australia, May 9 (UPI) -- Australia is boosting anti-terror aviation security measures for air cargo.

The Australian reported that all cargo passing through domestic airports will be screened for the first time for explosives, operations for vetting airport and maritime port workers will be centralized and more police will be added to facilities.

The measures were detailed in the government's 2006-2007 budget, which was released Tuesday.

The budget allocates for the first time $11 billion (U.S. $8.5 billion) to include major domestic airports in screening of cargo for explosives, something already done at international airports. Customs and other entities were also being allocated funds for other various security-enhancing airport measures. Included are base alarms, TV monitoring systems, more police, mobile x-ray screening vans and dog detector teams.
